Hey Everybody

Some exciting news coming out of Studio Technique in Montreal! Andreas Deja will be teaching a Master Class for Animation Professionals, Students or Enthusiasts. You might have heard of Andreas as a Legend in the Animation field and he has been an Animator over at Disney for 30 YEARS! This Master Class is a rare and exciting opportunity for anyone to sign up and get some great access and insight into an AMAZING animator. Classes like these are not often offered to most of us and it is a great opportunity for people to come and get some one on one feedback.

Where: Hyatt Regency Montreal
When: June 2nd, 2012
Why: to raise the bar on feature film quality animation and classical drawing

Here is some more info about the Master Class and  Samantha Youssef which is the Artistic Director at  Studio Technique, that the great folks over there have sent me.

This is news Because!

1) it's highly unusual for animation artists of this caliber to come to Montreal: generally they present in NYC, LA, Tokyo, Paris, or Toronto. Andreas Deja has worked at Disney for 30 years and on several academy award winning pictures. He has a huge international fan base. We are expecting visitors from around the world.

2) it's the first open-to-the-public MasterClass that Andreas has done. For many animation industry professionals and aspiring artists still in school, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This event is geared towards animation industry professionals, students or enthusiasts.

Samantha Youssef is the Artistic Director of Studio Technique, an artistic training studio now celebrating 2 years of operation, located in downtown Montreal. The studio offers courses in drawing and animation for all levels from beginners to professionals. In addition, her studio presents world-class events with the goal of raising the standard of animation and drawing in Montreal to that of other more-established centers like Toronto and Los Angeles. This event will help to fund the next phase of the studio, which is to build a world-class feature animation production house in Montreal.

Samantha, on the subject of declining draftsmanship in the animation industry:

“The sad truth is that drawing skills, real draftsmanship, is not being provided by animation and gaming studios today. The legends of animation like Andreas, Glen Keane and the older generation of the Nine Old Men, were rigorously trained at Disney by masters of drawing, who in turn had been mentored by the artists who came before them. The skills and best practices were handed down in a structured master/apprentice arrangement that was integrated into their workday. They spent years honing their drawing skills in life drawing classes. They studied animation techniques from the past, determined to learn as much as they could at every opportunity.

So if you’re serious about animation as a career, regardless of whether you’re in gaming, advertising or feature films, you need to seek out training that will stretch and challenge you and push you to the next level so that your artistic reputation grows, and you are sought out for projects that give you the chance to leave your mark.

You also need a regular dose of inspiration. And there’s just nothing like being in a room full of like-minded people, watching a legendary animator create great art before your eyes in real time to keep that flame of motivation burning brightly. It gives you new energy and hope. It’s the best way to avoid getting stale and feeling demoralized.

Our mission is to provide that level of artistic training, through classes and special events like this one. We schedule them around the work week so that professionals can get to them. We make sure they qualify as 100% tax deductions so that professional artists can afford them.  And we aim high. Really high. We bring in teachers of the highest caliber from around the world, people that would never normally come to Montreal, because we believe that exposure to world-class training is required, not just desired, if your goal is to become a world-class animator."

So head on over to the Studio Technique website and check out the school. It looks amazing and I have had the benefit of attending some of Samanthas' Online Lectures for Life Drawing. She is an amazing artists and really an expert in the field. She has a passion for life drawing that I have not seen in an instructor in a REAL long time. I have enjoyed listening and re-watching her lectures over and over because there is so much information in there that will only help my skills in the future.

This workshop is going to be amazing and well worth the trip!
Here is a link about the Seminar here and you can sign up there as well. Get in soon to make sure that you secure a spot!

Enjoy!
