Animating a Quadruped with AnimSquad

I had the pleasure of working with Matt Shumway while at Rhythm & Hues and he was my animation supervisor on HOP. Have a look at this preview from a workshop about quadruped animation. Some great insight to creature stuff.

Animals and Creatures Reel from Animation Apprentice

Here at Bucks we are committed to training animators not just in character animation but also in creature work, doing the kind of animation that is in high demand at Soho visual effects houses like Framestore, MPC, Double Negative and Cinesite. Our second year animators will devote at least a quarter of their time just to the business of animating animals and creatures, preparing them for a successful career in visual effects.

I teach animation not just at Bucks but also at my online school at www.animationapprentice.org, founded in September 2012. Animation Apprentice is still a very young animation school, but we have just put together the first compilation of animal and creature work, showcasing some of the best work done by the students.

Starting in September, our second year animators will start to tackle similar exercises, making animation that feels realistic and believable, but also has character and personality. Bringing creatures to life in a photorealistic environment is a hard trick to pull off, but with the right training and the right amount of practice, we should soon be seeing work at Bucks of the same - or even higher - standard.

Last year when we put the creature animation module together we had input from Kevin Spruce, head of animation at Framestore, and one of the best creature animators in the world.  He kindly agreed to be our external validator, casting an experienced eye over the course content, and helping to make sure that the work being done is of the right standard.

Free live animation webinar at Escape Studios on Wednesday 26 March at 6pm

I'll be doing a live animation webinar courtesy of London's Escape Studios on Wednesday 26 March at 6pm. We'll be tackling the animation of multi-legged creatures, and I'll be demonstrating a technique that allows you to animate apparently complex creatures in a simple way, creating sophisticated animation in a clean and efficient workflow. It's only an hour long, it'll be fun - and it's completely free!

Escape Studios describes itself as The Visual Effects Academy. They are in fact one of the leading providers of quality visual effects training in the UK. I know this from personal experience since I was both a student and a tutor there, and can personally vouch for the quality of the work that they do, and the excellence of their classes.

So sign up now! The webinar is completely free! To get started, all you have to do is follow this link and Register.

Animation Workflow: William Groebe of Tippett Studios shares Tips and Tricks for Animating Animals

A great little video about William Groebe's experience animating animals. He has been on the industry for quite some time and is a Animation Supervisor over at Tippett Studios. During part of his breakdown of all the variations and types of ways and styles to animate creatures and/or animals, I remembered my time at Rhythm and Hues. I would go from animating Carlos on Hop to realistic Penguins on Mr. Poppers Penguins and back and forth like that. I found that each film was challenging and allowed me to grow all the time as an animator. It's like that at most VFX houses switching from one to another frequently so you really have to adapt quickly. We had a ton of real live footage like William talks about and get a chance to really study the moves of animals.
