BAFTA offers scholarships worth £10,000 for post-graduate courses in film, television or games

BAFTA has now opened applications for its scholarship programmes. The BAFTA Scholarship Programme, which assists talented UK nationals in need of financial support to study a post-graduate course in film, television or games in the UK, is now accepting applications for the forthcoming academic year. The deadline for applications is Monday 16 June.

What is on offer?

Each BAFTA Scholar will receive:

1. Up to £10,000 towards their course fees for a year
2. Mentoring support from BAFTA members
3. Free access to BAFTA events around the UK. 

In addition, three of the chosen scholars will receive the Prince William Scholarship in Film, Television and Games, supported by BAFTA and Warner Bros.

These scholarships are awarded in the name of HRH The Duke of Cambridge in his role as President of BAFTA. The recipients will have their fees funded by Warner Bros. and will additionally receive a short funded work placement within the Warner Bros. group of companies, access to a Warner Bros. mentor, and invitations to a series of industry masterclasses.

BAFTA is offering a new Hong Kong Scholarship scheme, supporting UK-Asia cross-cultural exchange by inviting UK nationals to study a postgraduate course in film, television or games in Hong Kong. The scholarship is worth up to £20,000 and is an opportunity to study overseas, get a master's degree, and generally further your education.

What is it for?
The scholarship is for UK nationals to study a postgraduate course in film, television or games in Hong Kong.

How much is it worth?
Each scholarship will provide up to £10,000 towards one year’s course fees, a £10,000 bursary for living expenses, the support of an industry mentor, and free access to BAFTA events.

When can I apply?

BAFTA’s scholarship programmes are part of charitable activity to support talented people at all stages of their career in film, television and games.

As well as their UK BAFTA Scholarship programme, (which includes the Prince William Scholarships in Film, Television and Games) and Hong Kong scholarships, BAFTA Los Angeles has an active Scholarship Program offering financial support and mentorship to UK students studying in the USA.

The BAFTA New York Media Scholarship Program supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing media studies at public institutions located within the New York City area.

The BAFTA Scholarship Programme in Hong Kong is the latest addition to BAFTA’s established scholarship programmes in the UK and the US for those in need of financial assistance, and is designed to support UK-Asia cross-cultural exchange.

At least four scholarships are available: Two to UK nationals to study a postgraduate course in film, television or games in Hong Kong. Each scholarship will provide up to £10,000 towards one year’s course fees, a £10,000 bursary for living expenses, the support of an industry mentor, and free access to BAFTA events.

Applications are now open on the Hong Kong Scholarships application page, where details of eligible courses can also be found. A further two scholarships will be available for permanent residents of Hong Kong to study at an industry-recognised UK institution.

BAFTA Scholarships - deadline 17th June

BAFTA is offering a number of scholarships for talented graduates who wish to continue their studies. You find out more about them here.

According to BAFTA:

"Our 2013 Scholarship Programme will award a minimum of six scholarships to UK students in need of financial assistance to take a post-graduate course related to a career in film, television or games. See the full list of eligible courses. Each scholarship will provide up to £10,000 to cover one year’s course fees, an industry mentor and free access to BAFTA events around the UK for a year."

National Scholarship Programme - up to £6,000 for students starting in September

Bucks is a participant in the Government's National Scholarship Programme (NSP). The University is to make available 192 individual scholarships worth up to £6,000 for students starting in year 1 of their course from September 2013.

Recipients will be entitled to a financial support package of £3,000 in their first year of study and £1,500 in each of their subsequent years of study (up to a maximum of three years in total).

There are a limited number of scholarships available and, even if you meet the basic and additional eligibility criteria, this will not guarantee your entitlement to an award.

Prince William Scholarships at BAFTA - financial support for your master's degree!

BAFTA has just announced three annual Prince William Scholarships (applications for which opened yesterday) which are intended to assist talented arts and media students in need of financial support.

The scholarships are for study at a post-graduate course in film, TV and games. Successful applicants will each receive up to £10,000 to cover their course fees and receive mentoring support, free access to BAFTA events around the UK, and a funded work placement within the Warner Bros. group of companies.


This partnership between BAFTA and Warner Bros. is all about investing in future talent. According to BAFTA, the Prince William Scholarships form "a key part of Warner Bros. Creative Talent, a multi-layered nationwide investment programme in skills and training for the UK’s creative industries".

The deadline is Monday 17 June 2013.

It goes without saying that any Bucks student who wants to go on to further study in one of the creative industries should go ahead and apply. Even if you don't win, the discipline imposed by making these sorts of applications is a useful skill in itself, and will help prepare you for other scholarships in the future.
